Historical Facts & Milestones

Newcastle Greyhound Stadium has been part of the North East's sporting landscape for more than 125 years. The site was originally used for trotting horse racing from 1899 before becoming home to Newcastle City FC and, later, greyhound racing in 1928.

The stadium has played host to many of the sport's biggest moments, including the first-ever All England Cup in 1938, one of the most prestigious competitions in greyhound racing. In 1946, the race attracted the winners of the English, Scottish, Irish and Welsh Greyhound Derbies, creating a true race of champions.

Newcastle has also been home to some of the sport's most successful trainers and greyhounds, including Norman Oliver's Scottish Derby winner Hi Ho Silver and Shady Begonia, after whom the stadium's restaurant was named.

Today, Newcastle Greyhound Stadium remains one of Britain's most iconic greyhound racing venues, continuing a proud tradition of sporting entertainment that spans more than a century.

Supporting Underdogs

In timely honour of this historic anniversary in greyhounds racing, we are proud to launch Northern Writers’ Award-winner Louise Powell’s debut novel, Underdogs.

Underdogs is a love letter to a disappearing community. Set in 1998, it follows ten-year-old County Durham lad George and his long-term unemployed Dad, Reg. George knows that Reg hasn’t been himself since Mammy died, and that the red letters coming through the door can’t be bringing good news. Things change when the pair meet ex-miner Bertie, who runs an underground gambling business that offers cash-in-hand work to local blokes who are down on their luck. When Bertie gives Reg and George the opportunity to secretly race his beautiful greyhound Goldie at the local flapping track, they take the gamble that could change their lives.
